Leaf spots caused by Alternaria species are important diseases on cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower in Brazil. Alternative substances with fungicide activities may be used to disease control without leaving toxic residues in the products. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of three natural substances - silicate clay (0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%), Ulvana (0%, 0,001%,0,002%, 0,003% e 0,004% ) and Neem oil (0%, 0,002%, 0,004%, 0,006% e 0,008 %) - on mycelial growth and spore germination of the fungus Alternaria brassicicola. The products were added to PDA medium, and the fungal mycelium disks subsequently added on plates, and incubated at 27 °C and 12 hour photoperiod. The mycelial growth was measured until it reached the end of the control treatment of the Petri dish. A spore suspension of the fungus was prepared for the germination test, which was placed on blocks of PDA, and incubated at 27ºC and 12 hours of photoperiod. After 20 hours, 100 spores were counted, considering germinated those which had germ tub equal to or greater than its width. Data were submited to regression analysis (5% error). The silicate clay inhibited 100% mycelial growth and 99% conidial germination of the fungus at all concentrations tested. Ulvana had little effect on germination, because it varied from 92 to 99% and did not affect mycelial growth. The Neem oil inhibited by 36% mycelial growth and did not affect germination. Silicate clay and Neen oil showed strong and medium fungicidal activity. The Ulvana substance didn?t fungicidal activity, but studies with induced resistance are necessary. Alternative substances presented potencial to fungicidal activity to control Alternaria.
